Hungry for more statistics from the annual NPD report for 2008? Oh, go on then! Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox 360 has outsold its PlayStation 3 counterpart by almost 2:1 during 2008.
Rockstar’s Liberty City odyssey sold 3.29 million copies on Xbox 360 compared to just 1.89 million on PlayStation 3. This comes as sore news for Sony as PlayStation has been the traditional home for the series since GTA III hit PS2 in 2001.
Now with GTA IV the first simultaneous multiplatform release for the franchise, Sony have lost ground to Microsoft in sales for arguably the year’s biggest game. This is due in no large part to not only Microsoft’s larger installed user base, but also the promise of Xbox 360 exclusive DLC.
In fact, sales of GTA IV for 360 could enjoy a further boost following the release of the Lost and Damned chapter this February/March.
The exclusive downloadable episode features biker gang The Lost and places players in the role of biker Jonny Klebitz. Microsoft bought the exclusivity rights to the content for a reported $50 million prior to the game’s launch.
