John Carmack has said during a QuakeCon speech that id Software’s free-to-play browser shooter is cutting it funding wise, in-game ads have ”not been big business.”
The trickle of revenue they get can’t sustain the project, but id isn’t dumping the free-to-play aspect. They will however introduce a pay-to-play option, with freedom to run private servers.
”The in-game advertising stuff has not been big business,” admitted Carmack, reports Shacknews. ”That’s not going to be able to carry the project.”
Those who subscribe to Quake Live will get the option to configure and run their own private servers, whereas free-to-play gamers will just continue as they do now.
”Quake Live is gonna be Quake Live for the foreseeable future,” he said. ”It’s only just now that we’re going to be able to put it to the test.” Would you cough up a subscription?
