Rumours have been going crazy that corporate giant Microsoft were interested and actively positioning themselves to takeover EA. Shares rose for the videogames publisher.
Microsoft has now come out to officially declare this rumour to be false, that they have "no plans" to acquire the multiplatform publisher and its development studios. Shares fell a little.
"We have no plans to acquire EA," a company spokesperson told MarketWatch.
Analysts pointed out this would make little sense, even if regulators allowed the buy, because much of EA's revenue comes from sales on rival platforms to Microsoft. They would effectively want to make the company an Xbox 360 exclusive powerhouse after all.
