John Carmack of the recently bought id Software has revealed something PS3 gamers might not want to know about. Rage is not so stellar on the Sony console right now.
It ”lags a little bit” behind the others in terms of performance, while the 360 ”makes it easier” to split jobs for the CPU. Rage is designed as a ”60 hertz game,” they’ll get PS3 up to snuff.
Both the Xbox 360 and PC versions of Rage match one another at 60 frames per second, but Carmack has dropped a bomb for PS3 owners at the moment. ”The PS3 does lag a little bit behind in terms of getting the performance out of it,” he revealed to Edge.
”The rasteriser is just a little bit slower – no two ways about that. The RSX is slower than what we have in the 360. Processing wise, the main CPU is about the same, but the 360 makes it easier to split things off, and that’s where a lot of the work has been, splitting it all into jobs on the PS3.” Point of order Mr Carmack, a ‘little bit slower’ would imply 40-50fps.
The id boss man is confident they’ll get Rage flexing the PS3 muscle though. ”Everything is designed as a 60 hertz game. We expect this to be 60 hertz on every supported platform.”
”The work remaining is getting it locked so there’s never a dropped frame or a tear, but we’re confident that we’re going to get that,” he added. Let’s hope so, but great news for 360 and PC meanwhile. See the Comic-Con 09 teaser trailer below.
