Yep, Marston is King alright. Nintendo was the clear hardware winner for May, as apparently we respond well to the new ”value proposition” of Wii.
”These May results show that consumers are really responding to the value proposition of our new Wii configuration that now includes Wii Sports Resort and a Wii MotionPlus accessory,” said Cammie Dunaway of Nintendo, talking about NPD, reports Eurogamer. 383,700 DS units and 334,800 Wii consoles shifted in May.
Xbox 360 held second place with 194,600 out of the consoles, with PS3 at 154,500.
”May also saw the launch of two great games: Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Wii and Picross 3D for Nintendo DS. They preface the steady drumbeat of big games for the second half of 2010 we announced at the E3 Expo that will keep fans engaged and having fun”.
All that goodness of 563,900 units for Super Mario Galaxy 2 still couldn’t topple the cowboy King of Red Dead Redemption as it dominated the US videogame sales chart. UFC Undisputed 2010 took 4th and 5th place with 221,100 on 360 and 192,300 on PS3.
Wii Fit Plus, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Alan Wake, Pokemon SoulSilver and Skate 3 made up the rest of the US Top Ten for May. Microsoft were pleased to note the attach rate for Xbox 360 was up 8.9 games, enjoying the best overall revenue in the market.
They added that May was ”typically a slower sales month” but gleefully pointed to four Xbox 360 titles that made the Top Ten cut for game sales. Microsoft are far keener to learn of the retail figures for June as their new Xbox 360 hardware went on sale.
Sony was all smiles too after this NPD report, citing this as the 10th month in a row that PS3 has seen year-on-year growth. Their prime focus though is ”this fall’s most anticipated launch” of PlayStation Move for the corporate giant.
”While tight inventory had an impact on sales numbers in recent months, we are now beginning to experience greater availability of product and are looking forward to this fall’s most anticipated launch, PlayStation Move,” said Sony’s Patrick Seybold.
”When PlayStation Move launches consumers will have access to a compelling line-up of motion-control titles that will appeal to casual and core gamers and, in the months that follow, a new line-up of AAA hardware sellers previewed at E3 will arrive on PS3 including Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 3, Twisted Metal and inFamous 2.”
Don’t forget that PS3 is the ”only console” providing us the chance to watch both films and play videogames in 3D, comments Seybold. You didn’t forget did you? Did you?!
