PS3 and Xbox 360 game sales were up though, by 14 and 9 percent respectively. None of the data collated includes digital game sales.
Only Microsoft and Sony’s next-gens actually managed to better themselves in terms of game sales at retail last year, over 2008. PS3 sold 11.9 million games with revenue of £342 million (up 2 percent), while Xbox 360 scored 16.2 million titles worth £459 million (up 4 percent), reports GamesIndustry.biz on Chart-Track findings.
From ELSPA and Chart-Track, PC boxed sales fell to 6.2 million (down 26 percent) which generated £91 million (down 22 percent). Of course the PC games market is dominated now by digital store fronts like Steam, Impulse and GamersGate.
Nintendo Wii games shifted 18.1 million units in 2009 (down 10 percent) pulling in £392 million (down 18 percent). While DS stood at 14.6 million (down 24 percent) managing £266 million (down 27 percent). Plenty of downs for ‘09 over ‘08’s super year.
