Having originally contacted 3D Realms’ Scott Miller, the decision was with Take-Two. Then 3DR collapsed and the fans poked Gearbox Software instead.
This remake of the original Duke Nukem 3D is being developed on Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 with game levels getting a huge sprucing with additional decals and other bits and pieces.
”I contacted George Brussard and Scott Miller, to start a conversation about the project - The shots managed to convince Scott Miller to a certain degree - But the project was only doable if Take-Two would approve it,” posted project lead and designer Frederik Schreiber.
”Thinking that Gearbox might have a better relationship to Take-Two, than 3Drealms, i contacted AdamF, who passed me through to PJ Putnam, Vice President and General Counsel of Gearbox Software.”
”Luckily Gearbox was interested in supporting the project, which resulted in a personal non-commercial license to Duke Nukem,” he added. Gearbox is of course handling the Duke Nukem Forever project due for release early next year, after it nearly went bust.
DN: Next-Gen will release ”when its done” but they ”wont hold back the experience, until the final game gets released.” The first official milestone of the project will be playable, in a multiplayer test. They will have ”a few maps, and the weapons, items, etc.”
Congratulations to the DNNG team and to Gearbox for letting it happen.
