Boo! Did we scare you? Of course we did - that was incredibly frightening, especially since you’re understandably already on edge thanks to this whole Halloween malarkey. Allow us, then, to make up for scaring the living daylights out of you, in the form of Halloween games and DLC spookily floating around this Halloween weekend.
Costume Quest
From the lovely people at Double Fine Productions - founded, of course, by the legend that is Tim Schafer - comes Costume Quest, an RPG that is based entirely around trick-or-treating. After your brother (or sister!) is kidnapped by nasty monsters, you go on a journey to save her and possibly bag yourself some candy too.
Your Halloween costume is not simply tin foil and a bucket, however - when faced with danger, our hero has the ability to transform into whatever he is dressed up as. Wearing a robot costume? Pow, you’re a huge droid with awesome lasers. That’s how the world of Costume Quest works, and we wouldn’t want it any other way.
The turn-based RPG battling can feel a little shallow, with not enough variation in attacks and the same abilities able to beat pretty much any enemy, but the sheer number of different costume collectables to be found more than makes up for it. You can grab a copy of Costume Quest now from both the Xbox Live Arcade and the Playstation Store for $15.
Global Agenda
There’s a brand new Defense missions available for Global Agenda players, based on this most spooky of holidays. It’s a 10-player PvE raid in which players work together to keep waves of NPS attackers at bay.
Along with the new level, there are also Halloween masks to collect - these are dropped by enemies during the new raid level. Completing the level will also grant you a special Trick or Treat mask, which can be worn up until the end of November.
The level and the masks are available up until the end of Halloween night, so make sure you jump in and grab those masks! Remember: you need to be at least level 30 to join a raid, so you may need to do some XP-grinding first! Global Agenda is currently 30% off over on Steam at the moment.
Red Dead Redemption
There’s some new DLC for the wonderful Red Dead Redemption, and it’s definitely got a chilling theme. Called Undead Nightmare, John Marston’s world has just been filled with zombies who wouldn’t mind having a taste of his cowboy brains.
The DLC features a whole new single-player campaign, with new locations, missions and cutscenes. It’s all very tongue-in-cheek, and the weapons are hilarious, from the torch for setting zombies alight to the blunderbuss which uses zombie body parts as ammo.
If you thought you had the best horse in the game already, think again - you can catch yourself one of the forse horses of apocalypse now, and they are lightning fast. Make sure you grab this DLC pack from the Xbox Live Arcade or Playstation Store now.
Minecraft
If you haven’t picked up Minecraft fever yet, now is a great time to do so. There’s a huge Halloween update coming to the game on October 31st, with a whole new Hell world to explore and plenty of other gameplay addons.
What do you actually do in Minecraft, you ask? Well, that’s for you to decide! It’s all about making your own adventure, exploring randomly generating terrain and finding treasure in the darkest caverns. This latest update adds new, nasty monsters, along with a sort of underworld that can be accessed via special portals.
The game is ridiculously cheap at just €10, and for that price you receive every single future update. Well worth delviing into - just make sure not to install it on your work computer, or you’ll never get anything done!
Gears of War 2
If you’ve been looking to grind your online XP in Gears of War 2 multiplayer, now is a rather good time to jump in and play. Up until November 2nd, players will earn 31 times the normal XP ina ll multiplayer modes. You read that right - 31 TIMES.
As if that wasn’t mental enough, there’s also a special Horde game mode available too called the ‘Chainsaw Massacre Edition’, in which players can only use Lancers, but can grind opponents with the chainsaw without stopping.
If you’re a Gears of War 2 veteran, make sure you grab a piece of this action - and if you’ve never played it before, consider picking a copy up and gaining some serious XP! Gears of War 2 is of course available for Xbox 360.
Team Fortress 2
No holiday is too insignificant for Valve, the developer of the wonderful team-based shooter Team Fortress 2. Up until November 8th, there is a whole horde of fun to be had, with plenty of new Halloween-based features to check out.
First off, there’s a brand new map called Mann Manor, and it has a Horseless Headless Horsemann haunting it - the first ever Team Fortress 2 boss. Then you’ve got four brand new achievements that can only be earned during this Halloween period, and new items in the Mann Co. Store.
There’s also a couple of other additions, including the Haunted Halloween Gift - boxes that can be randomly found around the place. All a bit crazy then - but would you expect anything less from Team Fortress 2? Make sure you get in game and grab those achievements before they disappear!
That’s your lot, then! Have you spotted any other spooky goings-on in gaming that we’ve missed? Let us know in the comments! Mwah hah haaaaah!
