One of the more shocking predictions out of CES 2012 has been made by Gaikai chief product officer Nanea Reeves, who has predicted that Sony or Microsoft will announce at E3 2012 that they will not be producing a console for the next generation.
Gaikai is a company that specializes in cloud gaming; one of their most impressive accomplishments was back in May, when gamers could play a full featured demo of Mass Effect 2 from a browser.
Reeves stated at CES 2012, “Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation. That will be the big news at E3.” Since Nintendo has already committed to the Wii U, that means Reeves is hinting that Sony or Microsoft will pull out of the next generation of console.
This is even more intriguing in the wake of Sony shooting down a rumor that the PlayStation 4 would be appearing at E3 2012. There is also the distinct possibility that Sony or Microsoft pursue cloud gaming themselves, using tech like Gaikai’s to create a non-hardware gaming system.
