Oban is the name of the new system chip for Xbox, according to rumour, which is an AMD chipset suffering some production problems. Sony is also choosing AMD for their tech.
The line of PlayStation 4 chips won’t be going into production until after Microsoft’s Oban has begun, reports SemiAccurate citing what rumblings they’ve heard about.
Global Foundries or IBM are the contenders for producing the PS4 line of chipsets, with a launch date tentatively somewhere from spring 2014 onwards. Microsoft is reported to have been using the codename ‘Durango’ for their next Xbox platform, but perhaps that was a cunning misdirection?
There’s simply no way to know for sure what the heck those executive types are up to in the Microsoft and Sony towers. Let’s just hope they don’t cut too many corners with these fancy CPU/GPU chipsets. Great news for AMD either way. Microsoft remains tip lipped on any ‘new Xbox’ talk, as does Sony with Shuhei Yoshida calling it ‘too early’.
