Star Trek Online has officially gone free-to-play, as players may download the client for free from the official site here. Players may choose the free-to-play Silver account, which is supported by micro-transactions, while players who choose to continue their $14.99/mo subscription fee are given a Gold premium status.
The difference between Silver and Gold, however, are very slight. Silver players get the same unlimited access to sectors and missions that gold members do, as well as PvP access, fleet actions, events and dailies, feature episode series, special task forces, and classes. Unlocking the Klingon content occurs at level 25, same as Gold.
Where the two accounts differ is that Silver accounts have limited Guild access, slightly fewer character and bridge officer slots, a smaller inventory and bank account. There are also limitations to in-game mail, voice chat and customer service as well.
For more information on Silver and Gold accounts, check out the official site’s comparison page here.
Star Trek Online was released in February 2010, and received an 8.0/10 score from Strategy Informer’s review.
