The Kickstarter revolution has struck the games industry and since March 1st alone it has led to $10 million being pledged and paid to developers to crowd-fund their ‘indie’ projects.
This enormous figure, raised by backers, includes pledges and actual money that’s gone through. Five projects dominate that $10m figure, including Double Fine and Wasteland 2.
Since Tim Schafer and Double Fine’s Kickstarter exploded in interest many other studios have been taking notice and launching their own bids to spark interest from gamers.
Thus far the games proposed are by and large pandering to a niche genre, like the action-RPG or point and click adventure. Everyone agrees that Kickstarter and other crowd-funded sources won’t be replacing the big publishers.
