Ubisoft Massive’s upcoming open world action game Tom Clancy’s The Division will feature a black market trading system where the player can trade food and water to NPCs for resources.
In an interview with the developers found by the Examiner, developers Mathias Karlson and Axel Rydby explain the setting of the game, in particular the focus on bartering and black market trading.
Design director Rydby explains the setting and themes of the game, and clarified that although food and water is key, players will not be forced to obtain it to survive.”Consider that our game is a lot about the fall of society, and things that we take for granted in our everyday life such as clean water and food, they suddenly become scarce resources in the game.
“Not only do you actually have to go out and look for food and water, but (they) become very valuable and rare resources that can be used to trade and stuff like that.
“But when it comes to having to drink water and eat food to be able to survive, that’s not really what we want from it. Food and water will be a very important part of the game, but players will not need to eat and drink to stay alive.”
With the game being an online, co-op affair, some player-to-player trading would seem to be likely, although the developers did not specifically state how the game’s economy would affect the co-op game. ”When society fell, the economy fell along with it, so there’s going to be a very active black market where players can trade their resources and the guns and the gear that they find in the world for other things to help them progress and to help them survive in the world. So yes, trading will very much be a part of the game.” said Rydby.
The Division will be released on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in the fourth quarter of 2014.
