For everybody wondering how exactly the hell Telltale Games was going to drag a story out of the world's most popular voxel building game, wonder no longer.
Here's the first trailer for narrative adventure Minecraft: Story Mode, shown off at this year's Minecon. If nothing else, it's got one hell of a voice cast; comedian and actor Patton Oswalt plays hero Jesse, and he's backed up by Corey Feldman, Ashley Johnson and the peerless Billy West of Futurama fame.
So here's the plot, straight from Telltale itself:
“Players will control protagonist Jesse throughout the season, as portrayed by actor Patton Oswalt. Jesse and his group of friends revere the legendary Order of the Stone; four adventurers who slayed an Ender Dragon. The Order is the very best at what they do: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect. While at EnderCon, Jesse and his friends discover that something is wrong... something dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and they must set out on a journey to find The Order of the Stone if they are to save their world from oblivion.”
There's a lot of negativity around this game, judging from what I've seen in the Youtube comments, but honestly I think it looks kind of fun. I mean, I don't play Minecraft so I have no idea what's going on, but it sounds like Telltale's taking the game's odd little snippets of lore and doing something interesting with them. The tone's not too twee, not too serious, and it's clearly aimed at kids who love the game. Looks fun.
Now let's just hope that the series doesn't fall victim to Telltale's familiar release schedule troubles. Minecraft: Story Mode is coming to PC and just about every other platform later this year.
