Activision has announced in a press release that Call of Duty: Black Ops III had a major opening weekend, earning over $550M in sales, and topping all entertainment debuts including Jurassic World. The windfall reverses a diminishing returns trend in the Call of Duty franchise.
CEO Eric Hirshberg proclaimed in the presser, "The Call of Duty: Black Ops III launch is bigger than any game, any movie, or any entertainment launch this year. But more importantly, our fans are engaging more deeply with the franchise than ever before." He went on to reveal that the game was enjoying more hours per player than any game in the franchise ever, with 75 million hours online over the three day weekend.
Twitch also reported that Black Ops III set records for the most streamed and most viewed game established of 2015 for the live streaming service.
Not all was cozy for Black Ops III on launch, however, as the PC version suffered extensive bugs and glitches. Developer Treyarch issued a quick patch on Monday, but the game is far from fixed.
Call of Duty: Black Ops III launched on PC and console on Friday, 6 November 2015.
