Digital Smash has announced this morning that it's working with Hiker Games to develop a Metroidvania-style action-platformer called Toy Odyssey: The Lost and The Found, which will be released for the Xbox One and PC on 21st September for $14.99.
Toy Odyssey: The Lost and The Found is about an action figure called Brand, who's trying to save the house he lives in from the darkness that wants to consume everything - including Felix, his owner. Brand must use various household items to stop the darkness before the nightmare begins.
Hiker Games says that there's a certain difficulty to Toy Odyssey, which mixes several genres; Metroidvania, Rogue-lite, Souls-like, Action Platforming, and some minor base defense aspects. There's over 30,000 lines of dialog to enjoy, procedurally generated maps making each playthrough unique, from a game that's said to be heavily inspired by Dark Souls and The Binding of Isaac.
Hiker Games are taking over publishing duties on the PC, while Digital Smash will publish the Xbox One version, with a PS4 port expected later down the line.
“We’re thrilled to be publishing Toy Odyssey on console. As soon as we saw the style and quality, we knew this was a terrific indie title that needed to be exposed to a wider audience here in the West, to take the game more globally. Toy Odyssey takes some of the most recognizable elements (i.e. platforming, RPG mechanics, procedural-generation) from games many of us played in our youth, and brings along the difficulty that many modern games just don’t give anymore. No hand holding. This game is a beautifully crafted example of indie talent paying homage to games of yesteryear.” said Digital Smash’s President, David Klein.
“We are very excited and proud to be affiliated with Digital Smash. Their commitment to the project and enthusiasm proves that the console versions of Toy Odyssey are in very good hands.” He continued, “Toy Odyssey takes the scary dreams we all had to deal with as kids and turns them into a fluid, imaginative platformer with Rogue-lite elements. It plays like many of the games we enjoyed growing up, but with beautiful graphics, sound, and gameplay.” said Nguyen Vu Phuong, Team Lead at Hiker Games on the prospect of working alongside Digital Smash.
Toy Odyssey: The Lost and The Found comes across as a standard indie platformer, but it looks like Hiker Games have found a way to mix it up and add more features, especially with the procedurally generated maps helping each playthrough feel more unique. There's more than 300 enemy toys to battle with, including tanks, paper origami cranes, and deadly toy soldiers, hundreds of weapon and item upgrades, a crafting system, and seven boss stages.
We mentioned the base defence aspect before too, which sounds like it could be fun, as long as it's something you don't have to worry about too often. This mode takes place in the bedroom, which is left undefended as players head off to fight enemies in different parts of the house, so you'll need to find the proper materials to build defenses that can handle a sustained attack from the darkness, using them to protect the companions you have saved as you progress through the game.
Toy Odyssey: The Lost and The Found is expected to be released on the 21st September for the PC and Xbox One, so there's not long left to wait for those that have been following this already.
