When last we reported on the Kickstarter for Overload, the spiritual successor made by the original creators of Descent, the prognosis wasn’t code. With only 4 days left, they hadn’t yet even reached two-thirds of their goal.
But miracle of miracles, they made it, raising over $100,000 in last few days. Their final push was anchored by a freshly playable teaser that helped to put them over the edge. (If I had to guess, I’d suspect that the developers dropped a not-insignificant amount of their own savings into the Kickstarter as well to make sure they hit their goal and got their funding. But that’s just baseless conjecture.)
It’s odd to see a Kickstarter play out like this, because for the vast majority of projects, they either get funded very quickly or never even come close. A campaign as tight as this one is a rarity. In their most recent update, the developers said ”We want to extend a huge THANK YOU to all of the backers who made Overload happen, not only with your pledges and positive comments, but for ALL the wonderful support in spreading the word on Overload!”
Of course, now that the interminable stress of funding is out of the way comes the real work–making a game that’s worthy of the hubbub. Best of luck, guys.
