Oculus CTO John Carmack has raised concerns about the future of the VR industry if developers continue “Coasting on novelty”. Speaking at the Oculus Connect conference last week, Cormack flat out suggested that VR experiences currently do not offer value compared to non-VR experiences.
“We are coasting on novelty, and the initial wonder of being something people have never seen before,” he said. “But we need to start judging ourselves. Not on a curve, but in an absolute sense. Can you do something in VR that has the same value, or more value, than what these other [non-VR] things have done?”
It’s difficult not to agree with Carmack considering that the majority of the VR products out that offer little better than tech demo experience utilizing a decade old motion control technology. Not to mention the various inherent problems with the technology itself such as motion sickness and mobility limitations.
