Astro Bot developer Team Asobi isn’t resting on its laurels following the game’s critical success and has laid out DLC plans for the PS5 platformer.
VGC visited the studio ahead of the game’s release and was shown a presentation that revealed Team Asobi’s plans to release ten challenge levels and five speedrun levels post-launch. However, VGC states that it is unsure if those numbers remain accurate.
Of course, Team Asobi has previously added to its Astro bot games. PS5 pack-in title Astro’s Playroom has received a plethora of updates in the past four years, with extra game-themed bots from the likes of Bloodborne and Gran Turismo being added to the game in the lead-up to Astro Bot’s release. Those extra bots also carried over to the new game.
Astro Bot’s review embargo ended just before the game’s September 6 launch last week, and it quickly established itself as the best-reviewed game of 2024. After over 100 outlets reviewed the game, it currently stands at an average score of 94/100 on Metacritic, and so far, user reviews on the site have it at 9.5/10.
Astro Bot’s biggest selling point is how it celebrates 30 years of PlayStation history. Among the collectible bot characters are tributes to a staggering number of PlayStation-associated titles, old and new. You can find bots based on characters from Resident Evil, Uncharted, God of War, Everybody’s Golf, Tomb Raider, Persona, Crash Bandicoot, PaRappa the Rapper, and many more.
The Astro Bot character has stealthily grown to become a modern-day mascot for PlayStation. Having been a lynchpin for testing the technical specs of PlayStation platforms such as the PS4 camera game The Playroom in 2013 and its VR counterpart from 2016.
Astro Bot got its first full-fat game in 2018 with the release of Astro Bot Rescue Mission on PSVR. While PSVR never sold as well as Sony might have hoped, it’s been largely agreed that Astro Bot Rescue Mission was one of the best games for it. It holds the blueprint for much of what would become 2024’s Astro Bot, which was also infused with the celebration of PlayStation found in 2020’s Astro’s Playroom.
Astro Bot is out on PS5 now.
