Publisher Warner Bros. Games and developer Turtle Rock Studio today released a new trailer for upcoming co-op FPS Back 4 Blood, showcasing its rogue-lite inspired card system.
Like Left 4 Dead before it, Back 4 Blood also uses an AI-controlled game director that “works behind the scenes, monitoring players actions, health, and choices, then responds by choreographing the world around them.” Its card system then adds its own contribution to how replayable the game will be, since it plays into both the game director and player’s actions.
At the start of every mission in Back 4 Blood, the game director plays a set of Corruption cards. Their effects applies to that mission alone, including environmental changes like turning off electricity and making everything darker, adding timed objectives, and special mutated enemies.
You’ll end up facing the likes of enemy swarms that attack on a timer, infected wearing armor and able to take an extra beating, or blighted opponents that leave behind a corrosive pool upon dying.
After the game director plays its cards, it’s your turn. You can customize your deck or go in with a pre-made one, depending on preference. Your cards grant you different bonuses and buffs that can end up defining your build. When looking for peak efficiency, you can coordinate builds with your teammates.
You can lean into a melee build, upgrade your gadget damage and focus on blowing groups of enemies to bits, or choose bonuses that let you heal when dealing fire damage or revive allies faster.
Completing optional challenges and objectives, earns you Supply Points and unlocks new cards. The former can also be used to unlock cosmetic items.
Back 4 Blood launches later this year, on October 12, and is headed to PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4.
