As sure as death and taxes, a Call of Duty game is always on the horizon, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (not to be confused with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare) is the next entry in the juggernaut shooter series.
After a humbling by EA’s Battlefield 6 in 2025, surely Activision will be out to re-establish its dominance in the shooter space, and with Infinity Ward at the helm and a new direction, it might have a chance.
But when exactly is the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 release date? What’s different this time? What can I play it on? We seek to answer all these questions and more below.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Release Date
The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 release date is October 23, 2026. A bit earlier than the usual November window for Call of Duty games.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Gameplay
It would be easy to simply say, ‘’It’s Call of Duty, you know how it plays’’ but we’re here to be a bit more professional than that (even if, yes, you do know largely how a new Call of Duty will play).
Truthfully, even Infinity Ward knows what Call of Duty is, and particularly Modern Warfare, so it’s aiming to make the ‘’definitive Modern Warfare’’ with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
How so? Well, there will be movement improvements, a bullet trajectory system that removes randomised weapon bloom, the return of Gun Game (with a mode-specific map that changes), and ‘‘Apec Attachments’’ for weapons that can drastically alter what a weapon can do.
The DMZ extraction shooter mode makes a return, but will be more fleshed out as a proper mode with changing weather, dynamic weather systems, and hostile forces that move through the zone. An unsurprising but sensible move given the continuing boon for extraction shooters such as Arc Raiders
So plenty of promise. We’ll have to see how it plays out.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Story
This time, Call of Duty goes for a Korean flavour to its warfare as the campaign will take place in both South and North Korea and feature three major factions (141, SAS, Republic of Korea Army) duking it out.
The campaign has three main narratives. One where a South Korean military squad goes up against an invasion by North Korea, another where veteran character Captain Price is on the run after the events of Modern Warfare 3, and the third puts players in the boots of a member of the North Korean dictatorship.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Platforms, Price, and Pre-Orders
The big news we had for some time on platforms was that the latest Call of Duty would not be launching on previous-gen hardware. So, unfortunately for PS4 and Xbox One players keen to get in on the next explosive entry in the Call of Duty series, it’s current-gen or bust.
And those current-gen platforms? Well, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S were always dead certs. There will be no Day One Game Pass release for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 after a change in Xbox strategies.
PC will also once again get in on the action, but is there a debut for Call of Duty on the Nintendo Switch 2?
Yes! Activision has confirmed Call of Duty is returning to Nintendo systems with a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Switch 2 release.
