Coffee Stain Publishing and Ghost Ship Games today announced that excellent co-op first-person shooter Deep Rock Galactic has sold 2 million copies across all platforms and seen a steady increase in player count on Steam last year.
Deep Rock Galactic sold the majority of its 2 million copies (1,180,195) in 2020 when it left Steam Early Access and also released on Xbox One. Since it’s a co-op first-person shooter that emphasizes teamwork, it’s possible that the COVID-19 pandemic also played a part in its player count also growing significantly last year.
The game’s average concurrent Steam users number increased to 4,856 in 2020 from the prior year’s 1,534. 200,000 more monthly active users also engaged in mining and bug killing than in 2019, for a total of 310,000. Its peak concurrent users number also established a new record (20,030), beating the previous year’s 14,863 players teaming up to brave Hoxxes’ dangers.
Deep Rock Galactic is also one of the most well-reviewed games on Steam and has secured the 12th spot on the list of most followed games on Valve’s storefront. It also reached the top of the global sellers list several times in 2020, which is no small feat.
While there are many deadly things waiting in its procedurally generated levels, fall damage claimed the most player lives in 2020 by a wide margin, depleting the health bars of 20,839,143 dwarves. Speaking from experience, the worst part is that some of them were probably not all that drunk.
The humble Glyphid Grunt proved to be the most devastating creature last year, killing 9,754,066 players. The considerably rarer Bulk Detonator and its massive explosions came in second. Supply Pods also proved to be quite deadly for the very people they’re supposed to help, squishing more than 1,200,000 players. 7,000,000 also died from friendly fire.
“Before we launched into Early Access, we reached an internal agreement that 200.000 units sold during the game’s lifetime would be suitable, and would allow us to continue and do a new game. But now we just crossed 2 MILLION units sold, and the game is performing stronger than ever - not only in sales, but also in the strength of the community,” reads a Steam post.
Deep Rock Galactic is available now on PC and Xbox One, Update 33 being scheduled to introduce new biomes and enemies in early February.
