Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns Gameplay
Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns brings back the turn-based strategy of the original through a Retro mode that simply revitalises the 1986 Amiga release; a Classic mode with smoother gameplay, rebuilt visuals, and quality-of-life changes; and the roguelite Kingdom mode that adds extra layers of unpredictability through procedural elements and dice mechanics.
For the most part, Defender of the Crown was a game of two halves. One was a Risk-like, turn-based strategy game where players must amass armies and fight for the total control of an entire map. The other part included mini games like jousting, field battles, castle sieges, and raids. Moreover, a varied selection of random events made Defender of the Crown feel like an early precursor of the Mount & Blade series.
Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns Story
For the most part, the story in Defender of the Crown was the one that players built for themselves through decision-making, smart planning, and skill. However, one of four preset Saxon characters is selected first: Wilfred of Ivanhoe, Cedric of Rotherwood, Geoffrey Longsword, or Wolfric the Wild.
The setting is that of England around the year 1149, during the Middle Ages, when, after the death of the king, different factions begin to fight for territorial control. References to the period abound, of course, but the legendary bandit Robin Hood also makes helpful appearances if summoned.
Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns Price and Platforms
No price tag has been set for Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns yet, as the game has just been announced by publisher Nordcurrent Labs and developer Black Tower Basement.
We know, however, the game is targeting all major current gaming platforms: PC (Steam & GOG), PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
