A job description for Eidos-Montreal, the developer of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Guardians of the Galaxy, reveals it’s working on something big.
A keen eye spotted the job for a Senior Environment Artist for an unannounced ‘AAAA’ game project on a LinkedIn page for former Ubisoft and Eidos-Montreal Artist Derian McCrea, which they worked on for two months before departing for a full-time position at Yellow Brick Games in August of 2025.
What’s Next for Eidos-Montreal?
In 2022, it was reported that Eidos-Montreal was in the early stages of developing a brand new Deus Ex game, but the company was sold to Embracer that year, and the project was cancelled as the studio endured layoffs.
Could there be a revival of that project? Seems unlikely, but the use of ‘AAAA’ to describe whatever’s being made appears to suggest it’s big enough to warrant that. After Thief VR, is it possible there’s a new regular Thief in the works?
Despite a few firesales, Embracer still has a hold of plenty of IP, including the rights to The Lord of the Rings, so Eidos-Montreal may be tackling something outside its historical wheelhouse.
Eidos-Montreal’s most recent project was co-developing Obsidian on Grounded 2 and developing Thief VR. In terms of future projects we know about, it’s assisting Playground games on the new Fable.
In its brighter days of the 2010s, it was creating great new Deus Ex games, a Thief reboot, and supporting Crystal Dynamics on its rebooted Tomb Raider series. The studio more recently showed its old magic with the vibrant Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021.
