Phasmophobia is set to receive its long-awaited Player Character Update on May 5, 2026, bringing a full overhaul of ghost hunter models alongside expanded customisation options.
From launch, players will be able to personalise their characters with a wide range of options, including hairstyles, innerwear, outerwear, and accessories.
Phasmophobia Player Customisation Without Microtransactions
In a welcome move, developer Kinetic Games has confirmed that all cosmetics can be unlocked through gameplay challenges or purchased via the in-game store - powered entirely by in-game currency, with no real-money microtransactions.
Some players have already had an early taste of these additions during the 2026 Cursed Hollow event, which offered exclusive rewards such as a necklace, t-shirt, and Forest Spirit Mask. These items will be granted to participants when the update launches.
New Animations and a Step Toward 1.0
The update also introduces new animations for death, revival, and the EMF reader, adding more realism to player movement as the game continues its journey toward a full 1.0 release.
“Since Phasmophobia launched in 2020, the team has put in so much effort to make the game more immersive and replayable,” said Corey Dixon, Art Director at Kinetic Games. “Giving players the freedom to personalise their ghost hunters feels like the natural next step.”
He added that customisation opens up future possibilities, while updated models and animations will “up the scare factor even more.”
Free Update Across All Platforms
The Player Character Update will be available as a free update on May 5 for players on PC via Steam, as well as PS5, PS VR2, and Xbox Series X/S.
