Elden Ring focuses heavily on finding a build that works for you. There’s plenty of flexibility in terms of choosing your playstyle, but a wrong choice or the desire to switch from a spellcaster to a melee fighter with a massive sword can lead players to wonder if there might be a way to respec.
The good news is that Elden Ring does, indeed, have a respec feature. You will, however, need to progress a bit before you can unlock it. We’ll explain how far you need to get and which items you need to have below, but be warned that potential light spoilers, in the shape of boss, location, and item names follow.
Elden Ring Respec - What We Know
Before you can respec in Elden Ring, you’ll need to progress enough through the main story to defeat its second boss, Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon.
She is found in the Academy of Raya Lucaria dungeon, which waits for you in the Liurnia of the Lakes region of the Lands Between.
Defeating the boss grants you the Great Rune of the Unborn, which is one item anyone looking to respec in Elden Ring absolutely needs. Having it in your inventory seems to be enough.
Once the boss is beaten, you also unlock the Raya Lucaria Grand Library Site of Grace, where you’ll find the NPC that enables you to respec.
- Elden Ring Respec Status: Available after a certain point in the main story
To do so, you’ll also need the Larval Tear, a consumable item found while exploring the world or rewarded for defeating certain enemies.
Although you won’t get them at every step, you should obtain a few during one playthrough, which enables you to tweak your build multiple times.
That’s what you need to know about how to respec in Elden Ring. For more on the game, here’s what we know about mod support and its config file location.
Elden Ring is out now on PC and consoles. You can grab it from Fanatical, for the discounted price of £41.99/€50.39 or your regional equivalent, as well as other major storefronts.
