Hardspace: Shipbreaker developer Blackbird Interactive has announced that it has reacquired the full intellectual property rights to the series, though the purchase price was not disclosed.
Focus Entertainment published the game initially in 2022 across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. This also saw them acquire partial ownership of the IP alongside Blackbird Interactive.
With the complete acquisition of the IP, Blackbird Interactive has announced that “multiple Hardspace projects are currently in development”. Alongside this, the developer has opened registration for the LYNX Pioneer Program, an initiative that allows fans to join playtests, see behind-the-scenes of development, and give feedback.
“It is rare to have an IP that resonates so deeply with millions of players,” Rory McGuire, President and Chief Creative Officer at BlackBird Interactive, said in a statement. “So we are honored to have this opportunity to deepen and expand that connection through new games that explore the Hardspace universe. Shipbreaker also wouldn’t be what it is today without our friends at Focus Entertainment. We are eternally grateful for their partnership and hope to work with them again soon.”
This news comes just over a year after BlackBird Interactive laid off several staff members, citing “economic pressures” as the reason for doing so, and also claiming that the layoffs were part of a larger “realignment plan”.
