There’s a new fantasy city builder in town, and we’re about to get our hands on it. Darfall is launching on Steam as soon as tomorrow, May 8.
Paradox Arc is the publisher behind the game from two-person Slovakian studio SquareNite. The premise is simple: to collect loot and level up a hero (or party of heroes) during the day, and to protect a growing town during the night. You might not have a lot to work with at the start, but soon, Darfall becomes a big fantasy town builder with classical horde defense ambitions.
Whereas far bigger titles like Age of Darkness: Final Stand are betting on expansive big-budget campaigns and meaty progression systems placed on top of the traditional ‘town survival’ structure, it seems that Darfall’s focus is on a more old-school, Blizzard-like sort of RTS experience. Mind you, it’s quite different from the classic Warcraft games, but much of their sensibility can be felt all over it if the screenshots are an indication.
Darfall’s key features, as described ahead of launch by its description on Steam, are the following:
- A retro-inspired campaign.
- Easy-to-build towns with drag-and-drop fortifications.
- Old-school fantasy heroes like warriors and wizards.
- An in-game scenario editor that supports, maps, quests, and even scripted campaigns which can be shared with other players.
- A highly replayable survival mode built around a night-day cycle.
The developers are also letting players know that AI-generated voices for “some player units from the barracks” have been used. It remains to be seen whether they’ll be replaced later.
