Insurgency: Sandstorm launches next week but anyone can give the multiplayer FPS a shot starting Friday, December 7, when its Open Beta kicks off.
Developer New World Interactive will release an update, coinciding with the start of the Open Beta, which is said to bring “the full map pool, character improvements including new voice lines, an optimization pass, and much more.”. In the meantime, a Gameplay Overview Trailer, narrated by lead game designer Michael Tsarouhas was released, explaining what people should expect going into Insurency Sandstorm.
The trailer kicks off with the Checkpoint mode, a co-op experience where up to four players progress to a map completing various objectives. The interesting twist is that fallen allies can only respawn once an objective is completed. Capturing objectives can also trigger enemy counterattacks.
Insurgency: Sandstorm will feature three PvP modes: Push, Firefight and Skirmish. Push requires one team to progress through the map and destroy the other’s weapon cache. Firefight takes place on maps with three points and “focuses on close and intimate encounters, featuring restricted loadouts and no fire support.”. Teammates respawn only when a point is captured, the goal being that of capturing all three and wiping the enemy team out.
Skirmish kicks things up a notch in terms of scale, featuring weapon caches which must be defended by both teams alongside capturable points. Losing your weapon cache means your team no longer gets respawn waves from captures. The mode is basically a large-scale hybrid of the previous two which also includes vehicles.
The trailer, found below, is well worth watching if you’re looking for an online FPS to play earlier in December and during the holidays. Insurgency: Sandstorm is set to release on PC on December 12, with console versions aiming for an early 2019 launch. Pre-ordering the PC version grants immediate access to the closed beta.
