Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is often brought up when talking about the greatest horror games ever made, and with good reason.
The series’ novelty of fighting ghosts with a special camera is a decent place to start, but the story of Fatal Frame 2 is what makes it so memorable. A historical tragedy that repeats itself is the backdrop for a haunting tale.
The story follows sisters Mio and Mayu as they get trapped in a village full of ghosts. The village was cursed after a ritual designed to keep out an encroaching darkness failed, causing these spirits to run amok. Now the girls are forced to reenact the ritual, but Mio ends up left alone to contend with the hostile spirits and search for her sister.
Luckily, she has the Camera Obscura, a special camera that can hurt ghosts by taking snapshots of them in specific circumstances. Those ghosts aren’t equal, though, and all come with their own unique challenge. In this article, we’ll look at some of the different notable spirits Mio must face in Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly.
There’s a small caveat at present. Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a ground-up remake, so it could add some new enemies or cut things entirely, so for now, we’re going based on what featured in the original version of Fatal Frame 2.
Fatal Frame II Enemies List
Sae Kurosawa
The main antagonist of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is the vengeful spirit Sae. She was a twin who was supposed to perform the ritual with her sister, but when her sister escaped without her, Sae was sacrificed alone. The ritual incomplete, Sae’s spirit was corrupted by the Malice. She returns with the Kusabi and envelops the village in the Malice.
The Camera Obscura can’t hurt Sae, and if she touches Mio, it’s over. So there’s a lot of escaping to do.
Kusabi/Rope Man
A powerful hostile spirit born from a sacrifice made to keep the Malice at bay. After the ritual failed, the victim’s soul came back as the Kusabi.
The Kusabi appeared in the original version of the game in a chase scene initially. Mio cannot kill the Kusabi with the Camera Obscura in that sequence, and just a single attack from it will kill her. Eventually, Mio does have to fight the Kusabi.
Ryokan Kurosawa
Once the Head Priest of All God’s Village and father of Sae Kurosawa, Ryokan now appears as a hostile spirit that resembles a mummified corpse.
Chitose Tachibana
The spirit of a young girl who died after getting trapped during the Repentance. She attacks slowly, but will let out a sharp cry that disables Mio’s flashlight, making it a lot harder to see.
Akane and Azami Kiryu
Previous victims of the ritual sacrifice used to keep the Malice at bay. Akane was allowed to survive, but lived with the guilt of her sister, Azami’s sacrifice. Her vulnerability allowed a spirit to enter a doll made for her, pretending to be Azami. The spirit eventually consumed Akane, and Mio encounters the corrupted Akane and the actual spirit of her sister whilst searching the Kiryu home.
Woman in Box
After trying to escape the Repentance by hiding in a kimono box with her newborn child, they were consumed by the darkness. Only the woman appears in the game, and she appears by crawling out of a box or a well.
Anyone familiar with Ring will recognise this as a familiar foe. The woman initially moves very slowly, bent forward with long hair over her face. Mio has to wait until the spirit lifts its head to show its face before using the Camera Obscura on it.
Falling Woman
A resident of the village who tried to jump to her death after the failed ritual, but ends up cursed to repeat that cycle of death once the darkness falls.
The Falling Woman will vanish before appearing to fall to the ground. She’s only vulnerable to the Camera Obscura whilst she’s in a state of falling.
