We have no shortage of great 4X games for PC right now, but few are as committed to shaking things up in that crowded space as Software Verde’s Mordfield Command, a new release which brings “wave defense” into the mix.
After several development updates and public demos, it finally launched on Steam on October 23. You can now jump into the action, with full multiplayer, map editor, and achievement support to boot.
I’ve already put some time into it and can confirm it’s a refreshing take on 4X strategy for sure even if a little more spice on the presentation front would’ve improved its appeal a lot. The most important thing is that it escapes the creative loop of riffing on Civilization and other 4X greats. I’m also a big fan of its more advanced units and the tactics they enable, personally.
To celebrate its launch into full release, the developers have released a launch trailer too. Watch it below:
Though resource management and tile fortification mechanics which are familiar are all there, there’s a bigger emphasis, of course, on pushing back against a ruthless AI enemy that’s threatening humanity’s existence. With its procedural map generation, PvP multiplayer, and custom maps and missions that are relatively easy to create thanks to the in-game editor, Mordfield Command is no small, timid project. We’re hoping it gradually finds an audience, as we’ve been impressed by it so far.
Mordfield Command is selling exclusively on Steam for $11,69 (limited-time 10% off launch discount). Before taking the plunge, you can download and play the demo.
