As Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord’s War Sails expansion swiftly approaches, publisher and developer Taleworlds Entertainment has answered some of the community’s burning questions, confirming both that our characters can swim indefinitely and that custom naval battles will be available at launch.
Although our characters won’t have trouble navigating more or less treacherous waters themselves, the troops under our command aren’t as lucky.
Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord’s War Sails Expansion Characters Can Swim Without A Time Limit
“Yes, your character can swim without a time limit,” the developer explained in a Q&A article posted on Steam. “Other troops, however, have limited endurance in the water based on their tier, whether they have a mariner background, and how heavily they’re armoured. If their ship sinks or they end up overboard, they’ll try to swim to the nearest friendly vessel and climb aboard - assuming they reach it in time.”
Thus, Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord’s War Sails expansion aims to model some of the main dangers tied to naval warfare, tasking us with looking after our troops as much as possible.
One way to improve our naval warfare chops and potentially ensure that our armies don’t spontaneously get taken by the currents is by engaging in custom naval battles, which will be available as soon as the War Sails expansion launches.
“Following your feedback from a previous community Q&A, we’ve decided to add naval custom battles — and they’ll be available from day one,” the developer added.
There’s quite a bit of customization that goes into setting up custom naval battles in War Sails, as we can “choose factions, select ships, randomize upgrades, pick troop types and numbers, and more.”
Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord - War Sails lets us test our mettle on the high seas on November 26, 2025, when it releases on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
