Konami has been busy after the announcement of the Metal Gear Solid Collection Vol. 2, delisting the original versions of the games featured on it.
Last week, at PlayStation’s State of Play showcase, we finally got confirmation of a second Metal Gear Solid Collection, which will bring home Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the last two mainline games not on modern consoles and PC.
Konami Abruptly Erases History
Outside of old hardware and backwards compatibility for the Xbox 360 version of Peace Walker HD, these two were very hard to come by, so it was a triumphant moment to know we’ll soon be able to play the whole Big Boss/Solid Snake Saga in one place. They’re even throwing in Game Boy Color’s Ghost Babel, which blends Metal Gear style with MGS ideas.
The scarcity of Metal Gear Solid 4, especially, has been the chief reason fans have long demanded it get a remaster. Locked away on the PS3, a console that was notoriously tricky to make games for, the only ways to play it in recent years were to own a working PS3 with a physical or digital copy, or stream it via a PS4 when it was on the old PS Now service (it was possibly the worst way to play that game).
The excitement for many has been tempered by the bemusement of a few, as Konami has been quick to delist digital versions of both games on old hardware. So you can no longer buy Peace Walker HD on your Xbox Series X/S, and for the five of you still holding onto our PS3 without a copy of either game, well, you’re out of time and out of luck. You will be able to play them if you already bought them previously, though (crazy, I know).
It’s hardly surprising Konami has delisted the games, but doing so without warning hasn’t gone down too well. There aren’t many people eager to make a dent in sales of MGS Collection Vol. 2 by rushing out to buy last-minute digital copies of MGS4 and Peace Walker on hardware that’s 20 years old.
You could be cynical and worry that the new version of MGS 4 could have issues being ported off the PS3. Certainly, that’s been the underlying rationale for why we haven’t had the game on any other console in the last 18 years, but they said that about Final Fantasy VIII once upon a time.
The Metal Gear Solid Collection Vol. 2 is out August 27, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC.
