A Grandaddy of horror gaming, the original Alone in the Dark trilogy can be yours for nothing on GOG right now.
GOG has been striving to preserve older PC games through its Preservation Program. The program ensures that selected games remain playable on PC forever, regardless of developer or publisher support.
And in celebration of that directive’s progress thus far, it’s giving away the classic 3D survival horror trilogy for nothing.
GOG Lets You Go Alone in the Dark Freely
Well, almost nothing. The caveat is that you must agree to receive marketing communications via email from both GOG and CD Projekt.
A small price to pay to own a piece of horror history? That’s subjective, but if you already use GOG, chances are you signed up for it a long time ago, so go enjoy some free content!
For the uninitiated, Alone in the Dark predates Resident Evil as a 3D survival horror series, albeit in a less refined fashion.
First released in 1992, Alone in the Dark combined haunted-house horror with a Lovecraft-inspired plot. The sequels were released in 1993 and 1995. Other sequels followed, but after the disastrous Alone in the Dark: Illumination in 2015, the series looked to be dead.
A remake of the first game, once again titled Alone in the Dark, revived it in 2024, and featured Stranger Things’ David Harbour and 28 Years Later’s Jodie Comer as dual protagonists Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood. Unfortunately, it wasn’t well-received by most critics.
The GOG Preservation Program currently features 271 older games, including classic entries such as Final Fantasy, Rayman, Total War, and Resident Evil.
The program allows these games to run smoothly on modern PCs and offers cloud saves, making it DRM-free for hassle-free offline play.
