If you need to take a break from playing powerful heroes and saving the world, sci-fi co-op first-person shooter Cosminers proposes a different type of experience, in which you take on the role of a novice space miner sent to a distant planet to find valuable minerals.
While that might sound rather unassuming at first, space mining does, seemingly, come with its own set of thrills and challenges when the planet you’re sent to has, on the one hand, a poisonous atmosphere and, on the other, happens to be teeming with monsters all too eager to attack you after dark.
Cosminers Blends First-Person Action with Survival and Base Building Elements
The time spent exploring Cosminers’ procedurally-generated environments is governed by its day/night cycle, which determines what we’re able to do while out and about.
During the daytime, our focus falls on uncovering deposits of raw materials, mining, and processing them in advanced refineries.
These materials help us create a variety of tools and weapons that come in handy later. In addition, they also help us repair and expand our base with additional modules.
As soon as night falls, Cosminers leans into action, tasking us with defending our base from monsters who aren’t too happy to have us running around their planet.
Aside from the weaponry we wield ourselves, trusty turrets help keep the alien fauna at bay, allowing us to carry on with our mining, provided we make it through the night.
Staying alive involves more than making sure space bugs don’t turn us into their next meal, as we also need to keep track of our need for water, oxygen, and food.
Inspired by developer Gravity Rifters’ “fascination with Silesian industrial culture and the human connection to work, technology and endurance,” Cosminers can be played solo – at the cost of slower progression – or alongside up to three other friends. The title is currently aiming for a Q1 2026 launch on PC.
