The upcoming Sonic movie received a very substantial amount of fan backlash over the Sonic design they had decided to run with, which resulted in the filmmakers deciding to push the release back to try and redesign the blue hedgehog to be more in-line with fan expectations.
"This is a franchise, and it has to be great, said the Sonic movie executive producer Tim Miller, when asked about the decision to redesign the speedy creature from the ground-up.
"Look, I was with fans and so was Jeff. When the s–t hit the fan, I went over there and said, “The most important thing to do, man, is say, ‘I f–ked up,’," said Miller, explaining the line of thought that they went gone with. The choice to redesign Sonic resulted in the movie being pushed back all the way into 2020, Valentine's, which is no small feat.
Having said that, the team is clearly trying to pull Sonic off right, and according to Miller, they may well be onto something. When asked whether he had seen the new designs, Miller had the following to share: "in fact I have. And I think the fans will be pleased."
Granted, this tells us very little in the grand scheme of things, but it's good to hear that fans have got another shot at getting the ultimate live-action Sonic movie. Let us see how things turn out over the coming months.
