Total War: Medieval III’s release date brings us what’s easily one of the most requested historical grand strategy games of all time. Below, we break down everything known so far about the Total War: Medieval III release date, gameplay details, trailers, and the latest updates from the developers.
Since the launch of its predecessor more than two decades ago, Total War: Medieval III has been at the top of the list of sequels desired by Creative Assembly fans. An entry in a sub-series with such a ravenous fanbase will find itself under intense scrutiny, which is why the developer has opted for a different approach this time around, engaging the community early in the game’s development.
Total War: Medieval 3 Release Date
Total War: Medieval 3 does not currently have a set release date and, given how it was in “early pre-production” when it was announced in December 2025, we won’t get our hands on it for at least several more years.

Total War: Medieval 3 Gameplay
Total War: Medieval 3’s gameplay has yet to be fully detailed. Early pre-production means that the team behind it is very much still “defining scope, prioritizing features which number in the hundreds at this stage, and shaping how our vision will translate into an unforgettable experience.”
The aim is to create a grounded historical sandbox that allows us to “rewrite history” across a period of “roughly 300 years of medieval history, between 1140 and 1440.”
The developer aims to depict seasons during playthroughs, while focusing on “flexible systems” like, for example, inheritance.
“Perhaps your realm starts with a classic monarchy and dynastic inheritance (i.e. the children of your faction leader can be the heir). As you go through your game, however, you may be able to change these inheritance laws and implement an elective monarchy not too dissimilar to the Holy Roman Empire’s prince elector system,” the developer explained in a post on the game’s forums.
“So instead of requiring you to play as the Holy Roman Empire to enjoy the variety of elective monarchy (horizontal replayability), you can experiment with it even when playing as France (vertical replayability).”
Total War: Medieval 3’s gameplay will continue to focus on a blend of city, military, and potentially social management on the strategic layer while putting us at the helm of large armies in its iconic real-time tactical battles.
Regarding the latter, the studio has set its sights on adding more than 20 units per army, using a recruitment system similar to that of Total War: Three Kingdoms – with levies tied to a certain region rather than a character – while allowing armies to move without a general.
Total War: Medieval 3 Price & Platforms
Given its early stage of development, Total War: Medieval 3’s price remains unknown. Its developer has yet to officially confirm the platforms considered for release.
PC is likely a given, since it has been the series home since its inception. At the same time, the studio now has its new Warcore engine and with Total War: Warhammer 40,000’s confirmed multiplatform release, we may also see Medieval 3 arriving on console.
