While the Duke Nukem sale is going on, Good Old Games has launched another holiday sale for the next three days, as they are offering a large selection of classic Interplay titles at 60% off.
Games that are enjoying slashed prices feature a collection of Star Trek games including the classic adventure game Star Trek 25th Anniversary, which for a lot of people broke the trend of bad games based on the license. Starfleet Command Gold Edition bundles the original tactical RTS with its expansions. Judgment Rites followed 25th Anniversary a year later, while Starfleet Academy was a space combat sim dealing with Kirk, Sulu and Chekhov when they were cadets. (The game came on 7 CDs back in 1997.)
Other notable titles include Freespace 2, Earthworm Jim 1 + 2, MDK and its sequel, Battle Chess, Cyberia and its sequel, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, the seriously underrated Conquest of the New World, and Descent: Freespace Battle Pack.
Notable in their absence, however, are the original Descent, Descent 2 and Descent 3. The original developer has explained in the GoG.com forum, ”Parallax Software still exists and still owns the copyrights to the Descent games. Under our 21-year-old agreement, Interplay has the exclusive rights to sell Descent and Descent II, and they have been doing so on Good Old Games and Steam.
“The problem is that Interplay has not paid to Parallax any royalties since 2007. We’ve talked to them about this numerous times over the years, and finally took action this fall. We served Interplay official notice that they were in breach of the contract, and when they still failed to pay we terminated the agreement.
“This means that Interplay has lost the right to sell the Descent games, which is why they came down from GOG. (We’re not sure why they’re still on Steam; they shouldn’t be.) “
