Following GamerGate-Style Mass Effect: Andromeda Harassment, Developers Raised Thousands For The 'Girls Make Games' Charity

As we approached the launch of Bioware's much anticipated continuation of the Mass Effect franchise, potential players started to poke holes at the title's questionable animation quality with a select few taking to harassing those who they assumed were at fault. Though it's been a long-standing joke to throw at Bioware for anything between Mass Effect to Dragon Age in the past, the latest criticisms went a little too far.

While it's certainly not wrong to say that Mass Effect: Andromeda had a number of people working on it who came from simply playing the original trilogy and studying hard to work on the continuation, targeting a few specific girls and bullying them for their supposed work on the game's wonky animations isn't cool - and numerous developers have banded together to make things right in their own way.

With screenshots and videos showing up as we approached launched, mean-spirited players took it upon themselves to self-identify the people tasked with working on the game's main animations and started to berate them across the internet for apparently ruining their beloved franchise. In light of this, Alexandria Neonakis - another woman harrassed for her work over at Naughty Dog - denoted to 'Girls Make Games'; a charity put in place to bring more women into the industry with educational summer camps and workshops. Numerous developers followed suite until thousands of dollars had to pledged to the organisation. Speaking of her donation, Neonakis told Kotaku "I think something like Girls Make Games is so cool because it simply sparks an interest in creating games" Of course, no amount of money can ever make these kinds of attacks right with even Bioware's Aaryn Flynn putting out a statement condemning the attacks directed at his staff.
