Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a prequel set before both A Plague Tale: Requiem and the first game, A Plague Tale: Innocence. It’s developed by the same studio as these (Asobo) and published by Focus Entertainment. It was released on Aug. 27 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Epic Game Store and Steam. It’s also currently available as part of Xbox Game Pass.
What is Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy About?
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a prequel set 15 years before the second game in the series, A Plague Tale: Requiem. It stars Sophia, the smuggler and treasure hunter who appeared in Requiem, and explores her life before she met Amicia and Hugo. The story takes her to the Mediterranean island of Crete, where she becomes involved with the island’s ancient Minoan ruins and mythology.
As such, a significant part of the story involves Theseus and the Minotaur mythology, with Sophia’s journey intertwining the game’s present-day narrative with events from the ancient Minoan era. The story ultimately becomes considerably darker and more horror-oriented than its bright Mediterranean setting initially suggests.
As David Dedeine, the Co-Founder of Asobo, said in an interview with Xbox Wire: “The fact that it’s no longer a pure stealth game, with action and combat elements being much more present, really changed the formula. It impacted how we built the story, the level design, the cinematics, and the chatter, basically everything.”
Where Are All the Rats?
The biggest change came in removing rats from the game completely. Where the first two titles feature flowing swarms of vermin that are integral to the overall gameplay, Asobo deliberately left them out this time.
“The hardest thing was being able to respect the plague lore in Sophia’s story, because we were extending it,” said Carol Ann Bañuls, Legacy’s Lead Writer. “The macula here has a different form, it’s new for us. So we wanted to fully understand how we’re going to make it work. It was interesting but also a challenge for us, because rats were such an important part of A Plague Tale: Requiem.”
Given that Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy favors action and melee combat over stealth, Sophia’s traversal skills have also received a tweak: she has a grappling hook and, while the main campaign isn’t open-world, each level does offer branching paths to explore.
How Long Does Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Take to Beat?
The story is linear but features 75 physical collectibles (such as swords and relics) plus 200 Resonance Points used for upgrades, so there’s plenty of scope to replay it. Therefore, completionists can expect to take around 20 hours to beat Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. Otherwise, expect to finish the story’s 14 chapters in 14 hours.
