Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a racing game developed by Fuse Games, published by Secret Mode, and made in collaboration with LucasFilm Games. It’s due out next month across all major platforms.
Fuse Games has revealed a lot about the game already, including a story trailer and vehicle descriptions, but what hasn’t been especially clear is what type of racing game it is or whether it features any multiplayer modes. Luckily, we’ve found all this out and more, so read on for full details.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer - Is It Multiplayer?
Yes. It has three multiplayer modes and supports up to 12 players, including one that puts the focus on knocking opponents out of the race.
First there’s an Arcade mode, which is the most straightforward multiplayer option as it allows players to compete to see who can get the fastest time per course. Results are posted on global leaderboards.
Up to eight players can race head-to-head in podracer matches; these vehicles aren’t the focus of the main game but still feature heavily across multiple modes and campaigns.
Then there’s the Multiplayer Tour mode. This one lets players upgrade their racer with over 300 parts and features high-speed, PvP combative competitions set across six rounds and multiple planets. It’s also the mode closest to the single player experience, in that there’s a sense of progression and emphasis on not just being the fastest, but potentially the most ruthless pilot.
While multiplayer is cross-platform, Fuse Games has said that split-screen multiplayer won’t be available. “We’ve known enough from our past what it takes to get to that [split-screen multiplayer],” Matt Webster, CEO of Fuse Games, said in an interview with Traxion. “Those weren’t the compromises that we wanted to make. We wanted to pour everything into the big-screen Star Wars [experience].”
Galactic Racer Solo Campaign
While the multiplayer options are worth a look, it’s the main story campaign that serves as the meat of the game. The developers have said that racing games need to innovate, and so Galactic Racer features a runs-based campaign that puts a roguelike spin on proceedings.
“We want every decision to matter, every upgrade to matter, every vehicle to matter, every race to matter, and like the runs-based structure allows us to do that, like we’ve never done in an arcade racer,” said Kieran Crimmins, the game’s Creative Director.
“Not only have you got to keep on top of the curve with your build and your skill and your track knowledge, but also you get to reset every time.”
Set in the lawless Outer Rim, Galactic Racer has players take on the role of Shade, a lone racer with past ties to the reigning Galactic League champ, Kestar Boon. Star Wars: Galactic Racer includes four confirmed vehicle classes (landspeeder, speeder bikes, skim speeder and podracer) and only certain perks and upgrades can be carried over between runs.
These take place on at least seven planets, including Tatooine and Ando Prime. Locations also include environmental hazards typical to that planet. For example, players can become frozen on Ando Prime. There’s also a Scenario mode for solo play that mixes up tracks with special racing challenges with unusual conditions.
The campaign takes place across a three-act Galactic Tour that uses randomized events and branching paths, with different routes offering rewards that can be used to upgrade your speeder’s stats and unique abilities. Each Tour requires a League Entry Token, which is revoked if you crash too often or fail to finish an event in the top three, forcing you to start over and requalify. Some progress, including Galactic Credits, carries between runs, while failure only delays Shade’s eventual confrontation with Kestar Bool rather than affecting the wider narrative.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer is set for release on Oct. 6, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
