Building an outpost in AoW4 is fairly straightforward and starts with selecting any hero unit in your army and moving it to a free hex on the map.
Age of Wonders 4 Building Outposts
Once there, you’ll want to click on your hero unit again. You’ll then notice a menu appear in the lower center part of your screen.
It contains the Build Outpost button, which you’ll want to click to start the process. At launch, it sets you back 25 gold and takes 1 turn to construct.
This is all you need to do in order to build an outpost in Age of Wonders 4. While the building process is straightforward, carefully consider the strategic placement of these structures to gain the most benefits from them.
AoW4 Outposts not only lock down provinces for their owner, but can be turned into cities belonging to any of the races under their control.
If you’ve reached the city cap, you can even construct a small number of buildings like stone walls or watchtowers, to prepare for the moment when you do eventually decide to turn it into a full city.
In addition, getting the Shadow Walkers society trait makes outposts start with the watchtower upgrade already built, while granting you 1 Dark affinity.
Just like cities, outposts do need to be defended from enemy incursions, since they cannot hold back foes on their own.
When placing them down, you’ll want to not just look for areas rich in resources, but also take note of how far your city is from others on the map.
Although conquest can often get you more territory than your city cap allows, knowing how to build outposts in Age of Wonders 4 gives you more control over where your cities are placed and which provinces’ resources you can exploit.
