They want to ”feel around a bit” before going multiplayer. They hope this will ”invite more” to the franchise. Battlefield 3 is ‘tipped’ to seriously challenge Call of Duty.
”Naturally we want to introduce more people to our franchise,” said DICE boss Karl Troedsson replied. ”A lot of people don’t want to jump straight into multiplayer. They want to feel around a bit and they’re ready to move over to online.”
”The hardcore online people, they don’t care, they’re just straight in. Maybe they don’t even touch the campaign. But we want to get more people in, invite more people into the franchise. That’s one of the main reasons why we have this different part of the game.”
Recently the FPS community has been complaining that singleplayer campaigns for the latest big name franchises have been seriously squeezed in favour of multiplayer. The most recent criticism was levied against THQ’s Homefront which had just 5 hours worth.
Crysis 2 has both off and online but an extensive campaign with almost 20 chapters to fight through. Battlefield 3 is EA’s main gun against Activision’s Call of Duty series and they hope it will seriously dent their numbers and give them a shot at the FPS crown.
