The French Revolution seems like a great setting for an Assassin’s Creed game - mass strife, plenty of villains, a general theme of law versus liberty, order versus chaos - but I’m betting there’s more than a few people out there who don’t know too much about this major event in European history.
Perhaps that’s why Ubisoft has released a new video to mark Bastille Day that outlines the fundamental steps that lead to revolution. Plus a new gameplay trailer with some jumping and stabbing.
It’s Hollywood History (for one thing there’s no basis for the claim that Marie Antoinette told anyone to eat cake), sure, but it certainly sets the scene for what could be an interesting Assassin’s Creed tale. Despite some loose and unsatisfying storytelling, the franchise is actually surprisingly good at examining the unfortunate truth behind historical events; few mainstream films would so openly acknowledge the role American hero George Washington played in the subjugation of the native American population the way Assassin’s Creed 3 did, for example.
It’s good to be back in the city, too. After a few attempts at large, open maps it’s probably a good idea to head back to a proper, sprawling urban environment and revolutionary Paris looks pretty stunning. Even if the basic running and stabbing does look rather familiar. Here’s the gameplay trailer released alongside the history lesson.
Assassin’s Creed: Unity is set for release this October 28 on PC and current-gen consoles.
