Gearbox might be focusing on its new IP Battleborn right now, but that doesn’t mean the studio has forgotten about the heavy-hitting Borderlands franchise.
Speaking to Game Informer, executive producer Sean Reardon said only ”asteroids” hitting Earth would stop them making a third game in the co-op shooter franchise. Does he know something we don’t?
“Borderlands 3 will happen,” says Reardon in a video interview. ”Well, I mean, asteroids could hit… (but) Gearbox is not leaving Borderlands behind in any sense of the word.”
He goes on to say that the team’s experience making Battleborn and designing a new IP will be invaluable when they return to the Borderlands franchise.
”Everybody will be very excited. We’ll be very excited and we’ll have learned things through Battleborn and all the other games that come out between here and then. That studio will be all the better. We’ll have better ingredients, we’ll have better people. All that stuff will exist.”
We all knew that Gearbox wouldn’t be dropping a cash cow like Borderlands anytime soon. In some ways it’s refreshing to see a developer step back and do something different rather than pump out another sequel in short order. That said, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is out on PC and last-gen consoles on October 14 this year, so what do I know?
