Civilization creator Sid Meier has just unveiled his new strategy game over at Firaxis, and this time it’s all about starships in the aptly named Sid Meier’s Starships. It’ll tie-in with Beyond Earth.
Meier says it’s a universe filled with ”interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration.” Designing starships and blasting through space is the driving force behind the new turn-based sci-fi.
We’ll have to take command of a fleet as we push to expand the influence of our planetary federation, through protecting their citizens and undertaking missions. Better technology will be discovered along the way in this turn-based strategy, so we can keep customising our fleet and beefing it up.
Maps will have ”dynamically generated tactical combat” to keep replayability high, says 2K.
”When designing Starships, I was intrigued by the idea of exploring the next chapter in the story of Civilization: Beyond Earth,” said Sid Meier. ”What happens after we colonize our new home and eventually build starships to take to the stars? What has become of our long-lost brothers and sisters from the planet Earth?”
”My goal was to create an experience that focuses on starship design and combat within a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration.”
If you own both Starships and Beyond Earth then there’ll be some ‘cross-connectivity’ between them, teases 2K Games, although they didn’t go into detail as to how but did say it will ”enhance and expand upon both game experiences.”
I’ll admit, when I first heard of Sid Meier’s Starships I thought ‘Sid Meier’s Pirates!… but in space!!’, but this seems like a happy compromise. It’s due for release on PC and Mac early in 2015.
