The Frostbite 3 engine allows for an awful lot of property and landscape damage in its games, like DICE’s Battlefield series. However the studio won’t be bringing its full destructive streak to the new Star Wars: Battlefront.
Having everything around you laid to waste ‘wouldn’t fit’ (where’d Alderaan go!?) with Star Wars, explains DICE general manager, Patrick Bach. Those AT-ATs can’t deforest all the Ewok’s home.
Star Wars’ rich universe ”…is shaping what we’re doing. So we won’t do excessive destruction just because we can. It’s more about ‘what do you need and what you want’ in a Battlefield game versus a Battlefront game,” Bach told Engadget.
With DICE working so closely with Lucasfilm, we are treated to the most authentic sounds, looks and animations for Star Wars ever undertaken outside the films themselves. The trailer alone captures that ‘essence’ of the franchise, and has fans rightly excited to join the battlefront.
While Star Wars: Battlefront is ”first and foremost” a multiplayer game, they will be including an offline single-player experience in the form of a series of missions that present challenges. These will actually be available to play online and in co-op as well.
Star Wars: Battlefront releases on PC November 17th.
