Rob McElhenney of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fame will direct the Minecraft movie. The writer and actor, who’s directed forthcoming TV movie Pariah as well as several episodes of the comedy show, made the announcement via Twitter.
McElhenney plays insecure, martial arts obsessed Mac in the cult FX comedy, and if he can bring just a bit of the same inventiveness and offbeat sense of humour to the movie then it could be something quite interesting.
Personally I had no idea that Mojang was even making a film, but it turn out they announced it last year. Details are scarce, but like the upcoming Telltale Games spin-off, it will be one tale set in a larger world rather than a definitive story.
“We don’t want any story that we make, whether it’s a movie or a book, to create some sort of ‘this is the official Minecraft, this is how you play the game’ thing. That would discourage all the players who don’t play in that way,” said Mojang COO Vu Bui last year. “When coming up with a story, we want to make sure it is just a story within Minecraft, as opposed to the story within Minecraft.”
Along with Telltale’s effort, the trailer for which dropped earlier this month, it seems like Mojang is ready to start expanding the Minecraft universe.
