There are a lot of factors suggesting that the upcoming Quake revival would be free-to-play. Selectable champions, an esports focus, and the general state of competitive shooters these days would tend to make you assume that. However, id Software has yet to decide exactly how the game will be distributed.
Quake Champions is a new title that both has to compete with modern shooter powerhouses like Overwatch while maintaining the gameplay that makes Quake a classic. Id creative director Tim Willits says they’re keeping champions close to the original, with lightning-fast movement speeds, weapon pickups, and evenly matched heroes.
From the old-school to the ultra-modern, we’ve got it all covered with our list of the best shooters on PC!
About the game’s release and whether it will be free-to-play, Willits says “I can definitely say that is a really hard problem, and so for us we’re trying to figure out exactly what people want more of, and how they perceive it. And I’m not even trying to be cagey! It’s not like we know and just aren’t trying to tell anybody, we don’t know and we’re still trying to figure this out.”
These quotes are courtesy of an interview with PC Gamer from last weekend’s QuakeCon, which also provided us with a first glimpse of gameplay footage from the upcoming title. The Quake III update Quake Live was initially designed as a free-to-play game but recently made the switch to a more traditional pricing model, so id is clearly experimenting to see what players want.
