Blizzard is recruiting two lead software engineers to work on “a robust first-person engine for an unannounced project”. The unannounced project will be using a first person engine which should raise some eyebrows after the success of the critically acclaimed Blizzard FPS Overwatch.
While Blizzard recruiting, isn’t big news, the ‘unannounced project’ is very interesting and could mean an entirely new game. Other than the fact it’s an unannounced project, there are next to no clues about what the project could be within the job listings. The internet will no doubt be rife with speculation shortly given the only game in Blizzard’s library that uses a first person engine is Overwatch.
While it may well point to another new game with an entirely new IP, I have my own theory. This recruiting comes right on the back of Blizzard canceling the Overwatch first strike graphic novel, which was to tell the origin story of Overwatch. Blizzard canned the novel due to the team “wanting to tell the story a different way” which could mean they are looking to place the origin story into the game itself.
Many players since Overwatch’s launch and its excellent short animations have cried out for a story mode. This unannounced project could mean that Overwatch with either get a story campaign more or a single player spin-off. I’d put my money on the former being the case since its makes business sense to create more content for the highly successful shooter.
